Session Overview

The pivoting quality principle behind quality is: “If you can’t measure it then you can’t control it” and is classically associated with ensuring: Engagement with Industry; Designing the TAS; Marketing; Enrolment; and Identifying student support needs; are designed to get it right before we train and assess.

Training organisations have always prided themselves on their ‘Quality Control’ during the  training and assessment phase and it was only when they started to investigate their approach to quality that they realised the omission of ‘Quality Planning’ controls was contributing to their inability to provide customers with the quality outcome they wanted.

Quality as a measurable concept has been firmly embedded into Australian Industry and Service Organisations since the 1980’s. It commenced with the adoption of the International quality systems approach and the release of the international standards ‘ISO 9001:1987 Quality systems – Model for quality assurance in design/development, production, installation and servicing’. The current standards are ISO 9001:2015.

Approximately 100,000 Australian businesses have been registered to this standard since that time and compete in a quality environment with international businesses on an equal footing many of these businesses are RTOs.

The incorporation of the words ‘Quality Assurance’ in the title of the ISO standards is the real clue to the advantages that a quality system approach has to managing an RTO. The ‘maths’ Quality Assurance = Quality Planning + Quality Control identify the main advantage of embedding ‘Quality’ in the Design and Planning phase of all of the RTO’s business processes.
