From Assessment Anxiety, Feedback Fear, to dealing with heightened emotions, the impact of life stressors and time management; in almost every cohort a trainer can find themselves in the role of accidental counsellor. We can feel ill equipped to have these challenging conversations and their aftermath can leave us feeling unsettled, confused, even inadequate.
So, how can we improve our communication skills to listen so students can talk, manage our own emotional reactions, and support the student to find their own solutions and link into more specialised support, if necessary?
This session will introduce you to the language of microskills. These transform difficult and challenging conversations into supportive, respectful, and compassionate ones. These microskills sit within a strength-base framework that focuses on the student’s feelings, bringing them back to the present moment, reconnecting them with their strengths and collaborating on achievable next steps.
It will include activities to embed your learning and practice using these microskills in a safe and supportive environment. It will also be a lot of fun!
If you’ve felt out of your depth in a difficult conversation, this session will introduce you to some skills and techniques that will help support you, support your students.
