Speed Training: Learner Engagement

17 March 2025
ONLINE via Zoom Webinar

Finding time for professional development activities can sometimes be a real challenge! Velg Training is proud to offer the highest quality content in the most convenient way possible, delivered by absolute experts in their fields, through this unique event.

But, what is Speed Training?...

Just like Speed Dating, Speed Training is based on the idea that focussed, short, sharp information sessions facilitated by our VET Expert can ‘bring you up to speed’ all in one day!

Our next Speed Training event provides the opportunity for you to register for a bundle of 4 x 45 min webinars and gain some real insights on Learner Engagement.

Overview:

If we want our students to retain and recall the lessons we share during training, we need to E.A.R.N it.

Continuing the momentum from his NVC presentation and drawing on the work of neuroscientist Dr Wendy Suzuki, Tony shares the four key factors that make memories stick. Summarising these four factors is, E.A.R.N, an acronym every trainer, facilitator and educator needs to know.

During this Speed Training event, we will explore E.A.R.N as:
  • Emotional resonance
  • Association
  • Repetition
  • Novelty
Most importantly, we will look at ways that E.A.R.N can be met during your next training event.

Tony will provide practical examples of how you can use E.A.R.N to drive both engagement and learning while bringing a little bit of fun, enjoyment and your own personal style to the training room. Join Tony and your fellow VET professionals on a Speed Training mission to E.A.R.N learner engagement and enhance learning outcomes.

Can't attend all 4 webinars live? Don't worry! Register for the package of 4, attend those that suit your schedule and you will be sent the recordings for any you missed!

10:00 - 10:45am
(AEST: QLD)

Session 1:
Emotional resonance

Emotional resonance: If it resonates emotionally, positive or negative, we are more likely to remember it and act on it later. In session one, we’ll take a look at some practical ways you can drive emotional resonance. We’ll look at the balance between creating positive and negative emotional states in the classroom and when these states might be useful.
  • Creating emotionally resonant learning experiences.
  • Balancing positive and negative emotion in the classroom.
  •  Using the power of vulnerability to drive emotionally resonant experiences.

11:15am - 12:00pm
(AEST: QLD)

Session 2:
Association

Association: If we can link new skills and knowledge to existing but related skills and knowledge, we are more likely to remember them.

In this session we’ll take a look at one of the key techniques for helping learners develop new skills and knowledge: association. We’ll take a look at the role of analogies, images and emotion in creating associations.
  • Building associations into key concepts and skills.
  •  Using analogies, images and emotion to enhance learning.

1:00 - 1:45pm
(AEST: QLD)

Session 3:
Repetition

Repetition: Things that are repeated, tend to be remembered. Again, things that are repeated, tend to be remembered (see what we did there :D).

In session three, we will look at repetition, and specifically how some forms of repetition are better than others. We’ll look at retrieval practice, its three forms and how you can integrate them into your training delivery.
  • The importance of repeating key messages.
  • Retrieval practice and spaced retrieval.
  •  Three types of retrieval, when to use them and how to apply them.

2:00 - 3:00pm
(AEST: QLD)

Session 4:
Novelty

Novelty: If it’s unusual or different it’s more likely to be remembered than if it’s routine or expected. In our final session, we’ll explore the power of novelty and its role in creating an engaging learning environment and even enhancing learning. Here, I’ll share some of the simple, quirky, unusual and unexpected things that I do in the classroom to communicate novelty, while having some fun doing it!
  • Novelty and its role in learner engagement and retention.
  • Ways of bringing novelty to your training delivery.
  • Appreciating the importance of ‘interest curves’ and ‘impact moments’ in training delivery.

NB: Each webinar is part of a 4 piece package, and cannot be purchased individually.
