Young Australians Get a Voice: New Advisory Groups Tackle Key Issues

Young Australians Get a Voice: New Advisory Groups Tackle Key Issues image

Minister for Youth - The Hon Dr Anne Aly MP announced the appointment of young people to five new Youth Advisory Groups.

The Youth Advisory Groups will collaborate with government departments on crucial issues impacting young Australians, including:

  • Civic engagement: Encouraging active participation in democracy and community life.
  • Creative industries: Supporting young artists, writers, and performers in building successful careers.
  • Employment: Helping young people secure good jobs and fulfilling careers.
  • First Nations education: Improving educational outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth.
  • Prevention of gender-based violence: Combating family, domestic, and sexual violence.

Over 900 applications were received, showcasing diverse backgrounds and experiences. Members represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, culturally and linguistically diverse groups, those with mental health experience, regional and remote areas, migrants, gender-diverse individuals, young parents, carers, LGBTQIA+ communities, and people with disabilities.

This initiative empowers young Australians to shape policies and programs that directly affect their lives. It builds upon the ongoing work of the 2023 Safe and Supported Advisory Group, focusing on child protection.

Minister for Skills and Training - The Hon Brendan O’Connor MP, commented: “We’re focused on making sure young Australians have access to high-quality education and training, and this advisory group will help inform that work. The nature of Australia’s workforce is rapidly changing, and we need to understand how to best engage young people into education and training to make sure they have the skills they need for secure, well-paid and rewarding careers.”
