The latest results show that recruitment difficulty increased by 4 percentage points over the month, to 55% of recruiting employers. Despite this increase, recruitment difficulty has been generally easing over the last 18 months, and now sits 20 percentage points below the peak of 75% in July 2022.

In December, acting First Assistant Secretary, Cliff Bingham, chaired a panel discussion on critical gender issues at the Australian Labour Market Research Workshop.
The panel explored the gender pay gap and found that in high income countries, including Australia, the gap was sitting between 10-25% and hadn’t moved much in the last decade. Australia’s current pay gap is 21.7% when looking at total remuneration, or 13% when looking at full-time adult average weekly ordinary time earnings.

Despite this, vacancy numbers remain at record levels, with around two-thirds more advertisements in the labour market compared with the monthly average for 2019.
