Recorded on the 23 March 2022 this session explored the importance of giving effective assessment feedback and unpacks what that actually looks like.

Please note that the revised Standards for Registered Training Organisations were publicly released on 1 October 2024 and will come into full regulatory effect from 1 July 2025.

The Standards for Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) 2015 will continue to apply until then.

This webinar recording refers to, and is based on, the requirements for the current regulatory environment.

Topic overview

Feedback is a key element of ongoing learning and assessment. Providing frequent and ongoing feedback is an effective means of improving achievement.

Feedback involves the provision of information about aspects of understanding and performance. It can be given by the assessor to the learner, or by the learner to the assessor, or by learner to learner. Ideally, feedback should be a dialogue rather than a one-way communication.

Effective assessment feedback is designed to clarify a learner's current level of understanding and skill development in order to help plan the next steps towards achieving the desired performance and knowledge outcomes. It helps learners reflect on their learning and their learning strategies so they can make adjustments and make better progress in their learning.

Good assessment feedback has a positive impact on the person receiving it. By focusing attention on the assessment task rather than on the learner, it motivates the learner to continue to work. By clarifying expected standards, feedback encourages learners to do the best they can with the assessment activity.

In this session John Dwyer explored the importance of giving effective assessment feedback and unpacked what that actually looks like.
