Giving Secondary Students a Head Start in VET

Giving Secondary Students a Head Start in VET image

Secondary students who undertake VET programs at school get a head start on finding a job after school compared to their peers who do not.

The National Centre for Vocational Education Research has released a research synthesis which looks at the reasons for choosing VET programs delivered in schools, including the models of delivery, quality of delivery, and the short and long-term outcomes.

The aim of this synthesis is to provide an overview of VET for secondary school students in Australia. The focus is on nationally recognised VET qualifications that contribute to a Senior Secondary Certificate of Education and not on the more general career education and work experience activities that constitute vocational learning.

The paper focuses on reasons for choosing and participating in VET programs delivered in schools; models of delivery; quality of delivery; and outcomes, both short and medium-term, from these programs.

It found that 75% of secondary students who did VET programs that count toward their Senior Secondary Certificate of Education were employed or in further education six to 12 months after completing their secondary studies.
