Finding Genuine ‘Solutions to Save Lives’

“The wonderful feeling you get after saving a life can’t be beaten!”

John Haines, former MICA Flight Paramedic,

Founder and MD of Australian First Aid and APL Healthcare

Vital Fact of Life

At some stage in our lives, most of us will either wish they had undertaken a hands-on first aid training course, or as a worst-case scenario, at least have quick and ready access to emergency information.  The tragedy is:

  1. Most people do not undertake such a course, and…
  2. Quick and ready access to emergency lifesaving information that automatically adjusts to local conditions wherever you are in the world has been non-existent, and…
  3. The Survival Gaps within the Chain of Survival* result in what we call a Resuscitation Failure Rate of between 90 – 95% for Out of Hospital Sudden Cardiac Arrests (OHSCA). Internationally this results in 6 million deaths annually, as well as the loss of millions of other lives from common acute medical conditions and traumatic injuries. It also results in a reduce quality of life for many survivors.

*Chain of Survival = Early Ambulance Call > Early CPR > Early Defibrillation > Early Advanced Life Support.

At Australian First Aid and APL Healthcare we and another small team have developed systems to solve most of these tragic issues. Everyone can make a positive contribution in helping to fix this tragedy. Let’s look at each point and see how we’ve tackled them.

1. To make First Aid training easier, convenient and fun, we developed:

  • The world’s first custom-designed online theory and assessment system in 2003; and more recently…
  • The world’s first smart First Aid manuals using QR technology.  In short, your books are also a demonstration video library, bringing life to your training.

2. Quick Access to Emergency Lifesaving Information
We currently have major Survival Gaps within the Chain of Survival because lifesaving information is unknown to most people.

As an example, do you always know the address of your current location when travelling across town or interstate?  Do you know how to perform CPR? If the answer is no, then you lose time and lost time can be disastrous.

To make matters worse, what happens when you travel overseas?  Would you know the local emergency phone number? Would you know the address of your current location? What about where to find a local hospital or the management for the local venomous bites and stings?

We’ve also fixed those issues plus more with the only First Aid app that automatically adjusts to your location in the world.

3. Making 'smart' First Aid Kits?

Let’s face it, first aid kits come in all shapes, sizes and varying packaging but most are fairly dumb. The best you can usually do is maybe read some basic instructions, assuming they haven’t been lost.

Our team has given this major vulnerability a lot of thought, resulting in the development of the worlds-first smart First Aid Kit, a kit that actually demonstrates what to do!

4. Fixing the Survival Gaps with a Mobile Phone Defibrillator

THIS is the big one! We have joined another small team in helping to develop the world’s first defibrillator that will work from your mobile phone and phone case

This will revolutionise OHSCA rates from the current meagre 5-10% in Australia to what we believe can be >50%, AND, unlike other AEDs that cost anywhere between $2,000 to $3,000, we hope to be able to sell this for <$100.  It is also being matched to our unique ‘First Aid Fast’ App, providing users with an almost total lifesaving tool for Everyone, Everywhere®.

Our company slogan is ‘Solutions to Save Lives’ which has been an inherent part of our culture since our founding as Australia’s first recognised private provider of First Aid training in 1988.  If you feel that you have a great idea that could further improve survival rates or would like to know more about any of our developments, please visit us at the conference.  Many thanks for your time
