Workplace training: employer and employee perspectives

Workplace training: employer and employee perspectives image

Skilling the workforce can lead to better jobs, greater firm competitiveness and higher national productivity.  The latest release summary from the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) highlights key findings from research which examined different aspects of employer-supported training.  It focuses largely on the technical report ‘Employer-supported training in Australia: participation, demand and supply’ which considers drivers of participation in employer-supported training. It also touches on related work which examines employer perspectives of workforce training; and work which evaluates training funded through the National Workforce Development Fund (NWDF) program, which sought to train, reskill and upskill workers in areas of identified skills need.

The technical report explores in more detail drivers of engagement in training which is employer-supported, and their relationship to: supply — employers’ willingness to provide training; and demand — employees’ interest in training.

Key findings outlined in the report include:

  • Learning begets learning
  • People in semi-skilled and elementary jobs are less likely to receive training
  • There is an appetite for training in the Australian workforce
  • Participation in training is not equally distributed
