Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC)

Industry Reference Committee membership matters

The Australian Industry and Skills Committee (AISC) Secretariat has been streamlining the processes for recruitment for Industry Reference Committee (IRC) vacancies in individual expert or organisation positions.

The details of this process can be accessed here.

Principles for guiding decision making on standalone units

At the 22 June 2021 meeting, the AISC noted that differing interpretations of training package policy requirements have been applied in relation to standalone units in the national training system, creating confusion for Industry Reference Committees (IRCs) and Skills Service Organisations (SSOs).

Standalone units refer to units of competency that are not contained within a training package qualification at the time of endorsement. They may be added to a qualification at a later point in time.

The AISC agreed to a set of principles to guide decision-making in relation to standalone units.  In order to address these concerns, a number of principles have been agreed by the AISC to minimise instances of standalone units occurring, until the issue can be considered more comprehensively as part of the VET Reform agenda.

Further information regarding the principles can be accessed here.

New approach to Cases for Change

The AISC also agreed to additional parameters for commissioning new training product work between now and the end of 2022.  Click here for further information.

Digital transformation skills strategy webinar to focus on what Australia's training system must do to ensure we leave no Australian worker behind.

The Digital Transformation Expert Panel has released 'The Learning Country' - its strategy for what Australia's Vocational Education and Training (VET) system must do to support our nation's workforce through the impact of digital transformation.  This strategy emphasises the need for our training system to move quickly given predictions* that by 2034:

  • automation will displace 2.7m Australian workers, and
  • technology will supplement 4.5m Australian workers, leading to a 15% capacity uplift to Australian businesses.

* Technology Impacts on the Australian Workforce (2020)

With the guiding principle of 'leave no worker behind', the Strategy emphasis that while digital transformation is synonymous with technology, it is those inherent human skills which cannot be replicated by an algorithm that will help future-proof the workforce.

To bring this message to a wider audience, the Australian Industry Standards will be running a webinar on 21 July 2021 11:00am to 12:00pm AEST to discuss the key issues for Australia's training system, digital transformation and how it will augment and affect the future of work.  Click here to register.

The unapproved draft unit published was: HLTAID003 Provide First Aid (Release 6). The endorsed version of this unit is: HLTAID011 Provide First Aid (Release 1).

RTOs are advised to ensure that their courses include the correct version of the unit. If you have any questions or seek further clarification regarding this unfortunate issue, please contact Australian Industry Standards.
