Addressing Australia's Education Challenges

Addressing Australia's Education Challenges image

In a recent podcast interview with The Conversation, Education Minister Jason Clare discussed a re-engagement between universities and government with a focus on enabling  a collaborative group of experts who can work through the issues facing education needs of today and the next five years.

"And so, one of the things I want this group of people to look at." said Minister Clare, "Because if, as the Vice‑Chancellor of La Trobe said today, that most of the jobs that are going to be created in the next five years are going to require a high school qualification plus more, a qualification from TAFE or university - I think it's nine out of ten of the jobs created in the next five years, and most of those are university degrees, you are going to need a university degree to do it - then we need many, many more Australians to get those qualifications."

Minister Clare intends to put this eminent group of individuals together over the next few months to begin looking into ways to address issues such as funding and accessibility, transparency, regulation, employment conditions, and also how universities and other vocational providers work together.

"This eminent group of individuals that I'll put together over the next few months, I want them to look at this as well as the other questions we're talking about here today." Minister Clare continued ,"It's that re‑engagement. We can achieve so much more in this country if we work together and one of those areas is universities and government working together."
